Let's talk best winter coats and accessories...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it’s definitely the time when Jack Frost starts nipping at your nose.  But just because it’s getting colder doesn’t mean we should throw fashion out the window!  It is possible for us to stay warm and stylish all at the same time.

First, let’s talk coats. As I get older, I try not to fall so much for trends and instead I choose more timeless and higher quality pieces.  A perfect example of that is one of my favorite winter coats from French Connection. It is one of the best investments I have ever made as I have owned this double-breasted, brushed wool coat longer than I’ve known my husband (14 years to be exact)!  If I can recommend, stay with a classic tan, black or grey color and choose one of these universally flattering styles for women over 40:

This year’s trends also include plaid coats and teddy coats. If you like trendy and don’t mind buying a new coat every year or two, go for it!

Next, let’s talk accessories.  You already know I am a huge fan of summer fedoras but my love for hats spills into winter as well.  Hats are not only super stylish, they also protect our skin form harmful sun rays and our hair from bad weather. Again, try to stick to basic, timeless colors.  Black, tan, and grey are a perfect staple. And if you are not a fan of fedoras or are looking for a more casual look, try berets and beanies.

Lastly, let’s talk scarves.  A beautiful scarf can not only keep you warm, it can also make the most basic outfit look great.  In the case of scarves, feel free to go wild.  Any color will work as long as it doesn’t clash with your outfit.  And since scarves are usually fairly inexpensive, they make a cheap and fast way to switch up your look.  Older women will also appreciate the coverage of their neck area as our skin tends to lose elasticity with age.

I hope you found a style you love and will enjoy for years to come.  And remember to stay warm!

What are some of your winter staples and what colors dominate your closet in the winter months?
