Let’s talk blessings…

The last few weeks have been hard. At first, my husband got laid off from his job of five years. Then, he and our daughter came down with Covid. As I was tending to our sick daughter, trying to lower her fever, cooling off her warm body, and rubbing her back, I felt scared. I was thinking about how our life, so wonderful just a few weeks ago, could turn around in such a short time, and I felt emotionally and physically depleted. When I read my devotional that day, it said “Do not let any circumstances intimidate you. The more challenging your day, the more of my power I place in your disposal. You seem to think that I empower you equally each day, but this is not so…I empower you accordingly…as your day, so shall your strength be.” (Jesus Calling, 365-day devotional by Sarah Young). I was grateful for that reminder. It gave me comfort to know, that God equipped me with all the strength I needed to get through that day.

The next day I read my devotional again. This time it said “This is a time of abundance in your life. Your cup runneth over with blessings. After plodding uphill for many weeks, you are now traipsing through lush meadows drenched in warm sunshine. I want you to enjoy to the full this time of easy and refreshment. I delight in providing it for you.”  As I was thinking about the past few days, my first thought was “What abundance, what blessings?” but then it came to me. It was the blessing of our friends checking on us the day before, dropping off hot soup and warm banana bread. It was our friends praying for a new job for my husband and for healing. It was our friends telling us they love us and the same wonderful friends sending us Grubhub gift cards, just so I don’t have to cook dinner after an exhausting day. And when my daughter woke up feeling better and I was able to take a short walk and soak in the sun later that day, I knew God was right, our cup runneth over with blessings!
